Path integral suppression of badly behaved causal sets

چکیده

Abstract Causal set theory is a discrete model of spacetime that retains notion causal structure. We understand how to construct sets approximate given spacetime, but most are not at all manifold-like, and must be dynamically excluded if something like our Universe emerge from the theory. Here we show common these ‘bad’ sets, Kleitman–Rothschild orders, strongly suppressed in gravitational path integral, provide evidence large class other similarly suppressed. It thus becomes plausible continuum behavior could naturally quantum

Two Badly Behaved Percolation Processes on a Nonunimodular Graph

We provide nonunimodular counterexamples to two properties that are wellknown for automorphism invariant percolation on unimodular transitive graphs. The first property is that the number of encounter points in an infinite cluster is a.s. 0 or ∞. The second property is that speed of random walk on an infinite cluster is a.s. well-defined.

We study several variations of a multiclass closed queueinp network model, all closely related to the open priority network of Lu and Kumar. Foi each of our examples it is shown that, as the population size n —• oo, the long-run utilization rate of each server approaches a limit strictly less than one. Thus no "bottleneck station" emerges in the heavy traffic limit. This is analogous to the "ba...

Murphy’s Law in Algebraic Geometry: Badly-behaved Deformation Spaces

We consider the question: “How bad can the deformation space of an object be?” The answer seems to be: “Unless there is some a priori reason otherwise, the deformation space may be as bad as possible.” We show this for a number of important moduli spaces. More precisely, every singularity of finite type overZ (up to smooth parameters) appears on: the Hilbert scheme of curves in projective space...

Diophantine approximation and badly approximable sets

Let (X, d) be a metric space and (Ω, d) a compact subspace of X which supports a non-atomic finite measurem. We consider ‘natural’ classes of badly approximable subsets of Ω. Loosely speaking, these consist of points in Ω which ‘stay clear’ of some given set of points in X. The classical set Bad of ‘badly approximable’ numbers in the theory of Diophantine approximation falls within our framewor...

Causal Sets: Discrete Gravity

It seems fair to say that causal set theory has reached a stage in which questions of phenomenology are beginning to be addressed meaningfully. This welcome development is due on one hand to improved astronomical observations which shed light on the magnitude of the cosmological constant (in apparent confirmation of a long-standing prediction of the theory) and on the other hand to theoretical ...
